Returning Thoughts From the Rose Bowl

Okay, got home around 7... had to unload all the tailgate stuff, then take the rental back... just now having time to collect my thoughts.

Pre Game Day Fun

Friday-Saturday: Prior to game day, we arrived late Friday night and we had a DSA member in the room right next to us. victory2128 and his fiance met with us Friday night and we made plans to hang out Saturday. We spent the day driving up 101 and kinda sight seeing from the car and talking Ducks before heading to lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings.

Saturday Night: Went downtown and had some drinks with AJ, got to meet some pretty cool people. Spent some time talking with a couple of Wisconsin radio people as well as a couple of local writers... even a chance to meet the Rose Bowl Media Director... they did an amazing job this year setting everything up.

Sunday My family and I took victory2128 and his fiance down to the Santa Monica Pier early where we hung out, ate lunch at the Mexican place at the end of the pier before heading over to the Pep Rally. While it was rather mundane compared to last year's pep rally, it was more "old fashioned" with a LOT more of the band, a GREAT pep talk by Joey Harrington and the best version of "Mighty Oregon" ever (okay, that MIGHT be an exaggeration, BUT, that 4 year old was pretty cool!)!

After the pep rally, we all went out to dinner and then got back tot he room fairly early as we had to get up REALLY early to secure our spot... like, we were there by 4:15 AM!

Tailgate We had another great time in Pasadena. This crowd was a lot different than the Ohio State crowd who were way more subdued. The Wisconsin fans like to party and we had a great time with those Wisconsin fans around us. In fact, there were times you couldn't tell where their tailgate ended and ours began... we kinda co-mingled.

Unlike the LSU fans, though, the Wisconsin fans, even the younger drunk ones were all pretty cool to hang out with.

I cannot remember everyone that showed up, so I am not going to even try! However, there were quite a few Duck fans and a lot of our regular tailgaters showed up.

For those that missed it, I created a new tailgate staple that had Wisconsin fans wondering how come they had not thought of this... Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs! Yes, that is as AWESOME as it sounds!

Post Game Thoughts

So, the game actually went almost EXACTLY as I thought it would... I knew that Wisconsin would be able to run on us early, but I also knew that they just could not contain all of our speed... if you focus on LMJ, DAT will burn you... stuff the box? Darron Thomas will go over the top...

The reason I had faith that Darron would be solid this game is simple, I never thought that Wisconsin could get pressure on him... they came in with just 23 sacks this season which ranked them outside the top 50... though the stats list them with 2 sacks this game, they actually only got one which was truly a sack (just my opinion as I am NOT the official scorekeeper). If people had watched tape of the games Darron struggled early on in, they would not that it had a LOT more to do with quality DT's getting in Darron's face early and the line having to make blocking adjustments. When a 6'5" D-Lineman is in your face, you HAVE to release the ball a little higher to get it over his hands... and that tends to cause some high throws... Wisconsin does NOT, contrary to popular opinion, have good defensive linemen that can disrupt a QB... hence Darron played like the Darron we all know and love.

The Badgers got almost exactly what I predicted on the ground... (for those that don't remember, I thought the Badgers would get up to 225 yards rushing with ball getting up to 166 yards). For the game, the Badgers gained 212 yards on the ground on 46 carries with Ball going 32-164 yards. They were a little above my thoughts on average yards per carry.

On offense, though, the Ducks far exceeded my thoughts on the ground... mainly due to De'Anthony Thomas' 91 yard run.

What I could not predict were turnovers. I thought our depth at Linebacker would play a role and boy did it ever. Kiko showed yesterday why we were all so excited after the Spring game.

Though the Defense gave up some yards early (151 rushing yards on 29 carries in the fist half), the defense got a little better in the third quarter (14 rushes for 74 yards, 5.3 per carry). The 4th quarter, though, depth began to show itself as the Badgers managed just 3 carries for ZERO yards.

At the end of the game, the Ducks, despite the first half shootout, held the Badgers to just 10 second half points and 224 total yards in the second half. Meanwhile, Oregon put up 17 points and 295 yards. The Ducks found themselves just short of a Rose Bowl record with 621 total yards in the game...

DSA Tailgate-ROSE BOWL Edition

Good Day all!

Just wanted to make sure that all our readers know there will be an official DSA tailgate in Pasadena. We have a parking pass, but it is not for a specific spot. Last time we had to get there at 4:00 AM, but were in a really good location.

We WILL have the DSA flag flying as well as the DSA banner hooked up to our canopy.

So far the plan is to purchase the adult beverages here and take them with us... mainly because I do not want to get stuck buying beer that I do not like!

At the moment the food plan is to stick to basics... it is difficult to bring specialty foods to a road game like this.

However, if there is someone who wants something specific, let me know and I can arrange. We are driving down and bringing all of our tailgate gear with us, so should be able to do a of of stuff.

The one thing we are not bringing, as it stands at the moment, is the generator. We will be bringing my wife's laptop and will be able to watch other games if we choose, but taking a gas filled generator on a 16 hour drive might cause some issues!

No generator also means we will be doing blended drinks the old fashioned way... shaken and on the rocks!

Early DSA Tailgate Information

An early heads up that there will be an Official Duck Sports Authority tailgate in Pasadena! I hosted a tailgate there for the 2010 Rose Bowl and it was a blast. We look forward to seeing new faces this time around.

Over the next week, I will finalize information about the tailgate and post it right here.

What I know now is that we are int eh GA parking. We WILL have the DSA flag with us as well as the banner. We will also have a canopy this time around and will bring the bigger grill we used this season. As always there will be plenty of food and drink.

DSA Tailgate-CIVIL WAR Edition

Okay... after another round of turkey, it is time to plan for Saturday... game time is 12:30... so the tailgate starts at 8:30... for our specialty this time... Salmon Chowder should be excellent and a good day for something warm...

Last time out we had a HUGE turn-out with some NEWBIES... it was a blast... many different people were there... cannot name them all, but Brian Jackson's mom stopped by to say hello along with R2FireDuck's son-in-law who happens to play for the New Orleans Saints... had fronstythesnowman (DSA handle) out all the way from North Carolina where he is stationed...

MANY others showed up and we had a great time...

Okay all, THIS is the time of year where tailgating should be good...this game is HUGE and we need as many DSA'ers out in force as possible... do not worry about any of our disagreements on the boards because this is a place to get together and discuss the positives... there is ALWAYS good discussion and lots of food and beverages!
This time out we will be having something new as a specialty food... salmon choder... it will be made with fresh salmon... for those that do not like seafood... there will be regular tailgate fare as well!

We will be in our usual new spot at the Serbu Youth Center Directly across Centennial Blvd (MLK) from Autzen. We will have the flag up and the Banner attached... but we are also in spaces 222 & 223.

Let me give some easy to find directions to our spot.

There are TWO Entrances for the Serbu Parking... ours is the WESTERN most entrance. After you go in this entrance you should see a long field to your left... go down the road until you see a bunch of spaces to the LEFT, we are at the farthest end on the left hand side.

Below are the details!

Okay all, THIS is the time of year where tailgating should be good... our two biggest home games coming up... this one a 5PM start... so the tailgating will be at the PERFECT time of day for a real great time.

Any of you that were at the two tailgates last year where jambalaya was served do NOT want to miss this game! That's right ladies and gentlemen, it IS jambalaya time... for this game do not worry about bringing anything but an appetite... for those that do not like the spicy nature of the jambalaya, I will still have burgers and dogs...

DSA Tailgate-Dallas Edition-***UPDATE***

There are still some questions about the tailgate, so here is a new Thread detailing the tailgate location.

Though the lot we are in is a bit of a trek, keep in mind that the location will provide us with a LOT of "special guests" as there will be a lot of great families around us.

For any that do not remember the details, here they are:

It is that time of year; when the crashing of helmets and the thunder of the Oregon Duck Motorcycle rattle through our bones. Football has arrived. With that moment arrives a time to gather, share food, beverages, conversation and laughs. A moment we cal.... TAILGATING!

Here are the details: (If there are any questions, please contact me, thanks!)

What: DSA Tailgate-Dallas Edition
When: Sept. 3, 2011
Time: ~ 12:00 local time tailgating lots open; I will be there!
Where: 715 Stadium Dr (0.4 miles From Cowboys Stadium)
Lot: Lot #3-Winsystems

It is a bit of a trek... BUT, it has a grass lawn across the entire front of the property and is popular for small tailgating groups desiring a great tailgating atmosphere. This is our most popular Cowboys Stadium tailgate lot due to the great view and fun atmosphere. Lot 3 also has a large grass area for larger groups.

We are DSA Tailgates... we don't let a little walking interfere with a good time! Right??!!

DSA Tailgate-Dallas Edition

Gentlemen (and ladies),

It is that time of year; when the crashing of helmets and the thunder of the Oregon Duck Motorcycle rattle through our bones. Football has arrived. With that moment arrives a time to gather, share food, beverages, conversation and laughs. A moment we cal.... TAILGATING!

We have the details, now, of the tailgate information for the Oregon-LSU game at Cowboy Stadium. There is some uncertainty about tailgate equipment, so it looks like we will use the same methodology we used in Phoenix. Unless a Dallas native cares to help us out with equipment, that is!
